CHAURASI KUTIYA (BEATLES ASHRAM)

Chaurasi Kutiya, popularly known as the Beatles Ashram, is located in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, inside the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, near the eastern bank of the Ganges River.

Chaurasi Kutiya (meaning 84 huts) was originally an ashram established by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) movement. The number 84 is spiritually significant in yogic traditions, representing the 84 classic yoga asanas and the 84 lakh life forms mentioned in Hindu philosophy.

🎸 The Beatles Connection

  • In 1968, The Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr) came to stay at the ashram to learn Transcendental Meditation from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

  • During their stay, they wrote over 40 songs, many of which appeared on the “White Album” and later works.

  • Their visit put Rishikesh and the ashram on the global map, attracting celebrities and spiritual seekers alike.

πŸ›– Structure & Layout

  • The ashram complex once had 84 meditation huts (kutiya), residential quarters, lecture halls, and a large meditation hall.

  • It’s known for its egg-shaped domed huts, designed for silent meditation and isolation.

  • Now in ruins, the site has become a place of artistic expression, with colorful Beatles-themed graffiti and spiritual murals adorning the walls.

🌿 Current Status

  • The ashram was abandoned in the 1990s after the lease with the forest department expired.

  • It reopened to the public in 2015 as “The Beatles Ashram”, under the Rajaji Tiger Reserve.

  • Visitors can explore the ruins, enjoy nature walks, and view art installations and exhibits on the Beatles’ time in India.
